An 8CD boxset of Faust’s early ‘70s music is due on October 8, and there’s plenty of unreleased music among more familiar tracks from the Krautrock legends. Exhibit A: Vorsatz, previewed here exclusively by MOJO and accompanied by Super 8 film footage shot by bandmember Gunther Wüsthoff in 1972.

Vorsatz was recorded by Faust in their studio in Wümme, Northern Germany and has been mixed for the first time to be released on one of two bonus albums available in the Faust 1971-1974 box set, which celebrates 50 years of the band.

Faust 1971-1974 will be released on October 8, available in both CD and vinyl formats - an 8 CD version or one containing or 7 LPs and 2 singles. Only 2000 vinyl and 1000 CD box sets are available here.

Faust’s full, eventful history is tackled by Ian Harrison in the new issue of MOJO, featuring interviews with many of the band’s surviving members. It’s a story of pneumatic drills, naked bassists, a debut gig that was also “an execution”, a dog called Crapeau, Richard Branson and much more. Of the boxset, and the legends surrounding the band, organist Hans-Joachim Irmler tells us, “I can’t say anything about myths. Just maybe this – Faust was the best, ultimate revolution in pop music…”

Joy Division and New Order’s Stephen Morris agrees. “The first Krautrock record which made a lasting impression on me was the debut album by Faust” he says. “The transparent disc looked spectacular and the music was mindblowing, not songs as such, it was something absolutely unique, the polar opposite of everything the Rolling Stones, Beatles and the like were doing. It was right up my street.”
