Pink Floyd At Pompeii – MCMLXXII

★★★★

LEGACY

The reappraisal of Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii the movie, this once super-prog totem of a hirsute band sonic voyaging in an empty Roman amphitheatre, began in the ’90s. Beastie Boys paid cheeky homage to the film’s striking imagery in the video for 1992’s Gratitude and Jonny Greenwood would force his pre-OK Computer Radiohead bandmates to watch it on their tourbus (his brother Colin deriding it as “ridiculous”).

Now, with its soundtrack restored by Steven Wilson – in a mix that is more detailed than the 2016 versions of five tracks featured on box set The Early Years 1965-1972 – it sparkles anew. The funky jam section of Echoes sounds punchier than ever, while the 12-minute-plus unedited version of A Saucerful Of Secrets is starker and stranger.

The new set also includes Mademoiselle Nobs, Meddle’s Seamus with a different dog barking along to the wailing blues harmonica.

Pink Floyd At Pompeii – MCMLXXII is out May 2 on Legacy.
